Having a bagpiper at a wedding is the perfect way for the bride and groom to celebrate, honor, and connect with their Celtic roots, or just to do something totally unique and unforgettable.
In my experience, the bagpipes are not limited to, but fit exceptionally well at five basic times.
Before the Wedding Starts
Calling of the Pipes" the piper plays a tune 15 minutes before the ceremony begins, this acts as a background that sets the stage for the wedding ceremony itself (can be inside or out as guests arrive) and lets those attending know the ceremony will begin shortly.
Processional
Occasionally the bride and/or the wedding party wish to walk up the aisle, with the bagpiper leading them in. In either case the bagpiper can also stand posted, playing as the wedding party enters, then changing the tune for the bride's grand entrance.
During the Wedding
As a solo or to accompany lighting of the unity candle, and can also be used to honor a close family member who couldn't be there due to recently passing.
Recessional
Almost always the bagpiper leads the newlyweds back down the aisle. I would recommend that if you wish to incorporate the instrument at all, reserving the bagpipe for the end of the service always gives the most dramatic results, literally shock and awe, especially if the guests and family members have no idea a bagpiper is present.
Wedding Reception
For a grand entrance of the newly married couple into their reception.
